The demands of writing for work and writing for myself pull me in some interesting directions. By th me of the day I have covered such diverse ground I know that it had made me a better writer.

If you have only ever had to write exciting things, and have never had to struggle to make the boring interesting, then your training is incomplete. If you don’t work that kind of job you should set yourself a task that allows you to explore that discipline. Pick the most boring thing that you can think of and write about it in an interesting way. If you can convince yourself it is interesting you may be onto something.
